Our Business Information for the Salsa

A little background information:

Mechelle’s salsa was born in 2000 with a twist on an old family recipe.  When Mechelle was a little girl she grew up on a farm in west Texas.  Every summer was spent at Gran Gran’s (Grandmother).  The whole community was farmers.  There were gardens all over the place to pick from.  Every neighbor had one.  This was a family affair with her mom, grandmother, great grandmother, aunts, and cousins, and everyone helped.  They spent days gathering up fresh tomatoes, onions, peppers, etc.  Gran Gran’s salsa was known four counties over.  The tomatoes were blanched and special ingredients added to make the salsa, chow chow, pickles and all kinds of vegetables that would be canned every summer.  Oh those memories!

Mechelle moved to the city sadly to find there was no version of Gran Gran’s salsa, pickles, or chow chow to be had anywhere.  In 2000 she started making her own salsa, giving it to friends, and selling it at horse shows and feed stores.  A few of the comments from friends are about “how addicting it is”, and how they have “never tasted salsa so good”. With much success; friends re-ordering and feed stores still selling it, a dream of perpetuating the tastes of her childhood in a much larger way came about.  With help she is now fulfilling this dream.  In doing so she hopes to be able to return the help her grandmothers gave to her as a child, and in the process see that many other people benefit as well.

The Business Plan:

DBA Born Too Fly Mechelle is manufacturing first the homemade salsa, which includes NO PRESERVATIVES in order to conform to the ever growing call from consumers for “back to nature” products.  The other products manufactured are homemade pickles and candles. The products are positioned at the high end of the market in terms of both quality and price since they are hand made. Mechelle has been in the business of making salsa now for four years and it has grown widespread in popularity. What once was a business targeting solely friends and family, it is now growing into a business that has far broader appeal, and far reaching potential as a factory is being established to produce the products in larger volume.

In order to keep the human touch back in canning salsa, pickles and other foods, all of Mechelle’s products made for Born Too Fly are produced in small batches keeping the homemade taste in the manufactured goods.  This puts human energy into the preparation as opposed to automated machinery, which makes Mechelle’s end product so much better for it.

Since Organic and Home Grown foods is where our future generations are looking, the anticipation is to give opportunities to people in local areas and commission local farmers to grow the vegetables that will be used to make the salsa and pickles in local small town manufacturing facilities.  Born Too Fly is committed to supporting local growers, and possibly partner with them to provide year round “hot-house” production for the produce to make the food products.  This would in turn provide year round employment for the farmers.

Salsa has now claimed the position of being the number 1 condiment in the world, outselling ketchup.  The Campbell Soup Co had sales of millions of dollars for their Pace Salsa products. Traditional salsa companies rely on high volume and mechanical process to make their profit. Mechelle feels that the human energy and the partnering with local farmers will help to create local jobs and local pride in the product itself, as relating to Born Too Fly’s salsa and pickle production.

Born Too Fly will build a foundation on offering the highest quality and value in its products. Many of the jarred recipes are family recipes that have been passed down through the generations, rich with farming heritage. Knowledgeable consumers are looking for quality products, filled with the best ingredients, and without preservatives. The consumer is crying out for a change! They want real down home products they can count on for taste without the worry of chemicals invading their bodies.

Mechelle has answered this call, first with the hot salsa, then adding other flavors and heat varieties, followed by the outrageous pickles. Constantly striving to supply what the consumer is asking for, we continually review what is available in the marketplace, and what isn't. Improving on what is available and providing new products and services to the areas of need will assure success in a market driven by consumer demand.

Objectives:

Mechelle, DBA Born Too Fly has several objectives the largest being the aim for Born Too Fly to become known as the premier salsa producer in the area with an ever-expanding geographic distribution.

Currently, Born Too Fly has three main line of products:

1.  The flagship product is the salsa, renowned for its freshness, uniqueness, and quality ingredients with NO PRESERVATIVES. Originally introduced in one temperature, hot, Mechelle’s market demand has asked for milder temperatures and sweet versions so she has responded with milder varieties. During the summer months special fruits may be added for other exciting versions.

2. The second product produced is a version of pickles like no other.  They were Mechelle’s grandmother’s version of Christmas Pickles.  A crunchy sweet pickle which has had customers that will not share them with their family and friends because they want to keep them for themselves.

3. The third product is a Candle that has more scent than other candles made, and those that have used them rave about them.  They are hand poured using only the finest wax, and produced with 4 times the scent of normal candles.  There are not many candles on the market that can boast the scent that Mechelle’s candles have.

Born Too Fly will target three main customer groups to sell the products to.

1. Wholesale distributors.

2. Trade Shows and Farmers Markets that target the customer searching for produce and wholesome foods.

3. ‘Direct Sales’ with Salsa Parties.  Some of the best ways to build relationships with customers could be SALSA PARTIES.  What a great way to spend time with customers, face to face, letting them try the SALSA products before they buy, and or become a distributor. The market Mechelle has already tested indicates that the products have a broad appeal and while recognizing this, is acting accordingly with plans for the factory to make the products.

Mechelle is the creative genius for the Salsa, Candle, and Pickle products, and having past experience in the Dallas business area knows the importance of keeping the product quality for future sales growth.  Cheryl, having been self employed in a consumer related business for the past 20 years provides the organizational skills to keep the day to day business in order. They are excited about the products, the resulting consumer benefits, and the opportunities they can provide to the smaller communities.
